HBA Sustainability Certificate
Empowering the next generation of sustainable leaders
I am pursuing a dual degree in Ivey's HBA program and Computer Science, with a passion for using technology to support sustainable practices. I have experience working at a Vancouver Island fishing lodge that prioritized sustainability, where I actively contributed to their efforts. I enjoy spending time outdoors, engaging in activities such as hiking, biking, and fishing. My love for nature has inspired me to take an active role in preserving the environment and promoting sustainable practices. With my unique background and interests, I am eager to contribute to the sustainability field and drive positive change.
What is your personal definition of sustainability?
My personal definition of sustainability revolves around being conscious of my individual impact on the environment through daily actions that contribute to reducing my carbon footprint. This can include using public transportation instead of driving, reducing fast fashion consumption, and reducing plastic consumption. Additionally, I acknowledge the role that corporations play in environmental harm and believe it is essential to encourage them to adopt a triple bottom line approach to business. Overall, I think it is important to prioritize environmentally conscious practices in everyday life and advocate for systemic change to address environmental issues.
What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?
Currently I am still trying to figure out what I want to do in the future so I am not exactly sure what role sustainability will play in my career. Although, as someone who recognizes the importance of sustainability and is passionate about it, I find it important to incorporate sustainable practices into my professional career. Furthermore, sustainability is becoming increasingly important in many industries, as consumers and investors prioritize environmentally responsible businesses. As such, incorporating sustainability into my career can help me stand out as a forward-thinking and responsible professional.
Even if my career path does not directly relate to sustainability, I will try to still incorporate sustainable practices into my work. For instance, encouraging my employer to explore sustainable business practices or adopting eco-friendly policies.
In summary, integrating sustainability into my professional career can help me make a positive impact on the environment while also enhancing my career prospects. By being mindful of sustainability in my career choices, I can contribute to a more sustainable future for our planet.
What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?
My interest in sustainability began in high school when I took an active role in promoting environmentally friendly initiatives. Specifically, I helped to lead the vermicomposting project at my co-op placement, which not only helped to reduce waste in the organization but also produced nutrient-rich soil that was beneficial for all the plants in our office. This experience taught me the importance of taking action to address environmental challenges in our communities and inspired me to pursue further opportunities in sustainability.
More recently, this past summer I worked at a fishing lodge in Vancouver Island that was committed to implementing sustainable practices. One of the ways they took part in this effort was collaborating with local community members, First Nation representatives, fishermen, and industry experts to support the recovery of salmon populations in the area. While working at the lodge, I also took part in various green initiatives, including planting trees around the property during my free time.
