Empowering the next generation of sustainable leaders
Some people over their whole lifetime never find their purpose. I am grateful that at such an early age I was able to find mine, which I believe is to provide others happiness, whichever form that may come in. Unlike the little acts of kindness on a day to day basis, my passion for sustainability allows me to make the world happy, spreading love on a larger scale. Through my educational, extra-curricular and personal journey, I’ve been able to serve my purpose in making others happy with actions towards sustainability, still I have a lot to learn.
What is your personal definition of sustainability?
To my understanding, sustainability is the efforts towards a prosperous and equitable future. Sustainability doesn’t just involve actions towards climate change, but looking to offer proper healthcare, education and clean water for those in poor socio-economic areas that do not experience what should be basic accessible needs. Sustainability is taking strides to create a healthier world and “healthier” people. This is all in hopes to create longevity for not only humankind but all species that live on this earth and preserve life itself.
What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?
I’ve given significant thought to how I may play a role in this societal goal of sustainability and the impact I can have as an individual. I have come to a decision to pursue a life of philanthropy, where I will not only look to aid projects monetarily, but also work with initiatives hands on so I can immerse myself completely with the idea of sustainability and making a positive impact. In the near future, I plan to work for NGOs like We Charity and World Vision, using their brand and resources in order to make tangible change on a larger scale.
I hope to get more involved with local initiatives to spread awareness and provide others an opportunity to make a difference in their own lives. This includes, but is not limited to volunteering at local charities, joining workplace sustainability councils, Employee resource groups (ERGs) etc. This will allow me to broaden my expertise, for which I will be able to pitch sustainable practices within the workplace, so that others will have the opportunity to make the world a better place.
What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?
During my time at Western, I took advantage of the vast amount of electives I was able to select. That being said, I enrolled in courses including Global Violence and injustice and politics and pop culture, where I gained insight into the issues that we face on a global scale today. This inherently changed my perspective on certain controversial and underrepresented topics and built a foundation of my goals and values as an advocate for sustainability.
Outside the educational environment, I have volunteered and participated in numerous fundraisers such as the bread and honey festival and the Canada day 150th. During highschool, I was involved in Eco-club, where I planted seeds in the neighbourhood. Additionally, I was in the Air Cadets (800 black forest squadron) where I took part in poppy selling, for which funds were given to local charities. These experiences helped me gain an understanding of what it is like to be one with the community and not live for myself. Knowing that my efforts were going towards a greater societal goal gave me comfort and ignited a passion in myself which I carry with me to this day.
