HBA Sustainability Certificate
Empowering the next generation of sustainable leaders
Having studied Geography & Environment at Main Campus, my passions for sustainability have gone beyond extra-curricular involvements, and towards leveraging literature in sustainable business practices. As a young adult and soon-to-be young professional, I aspire to make a positive impact to society across the ESG spectrum. I hope to be a part of a generation of forward-thinking business leaders and pathfinders, individuals and teams who make material progress towards making sustainability a key consideration both in their professional and personal lives as I wholeheartedly believe that it is our onus to do so.
What is your personal definition of sustainability?
In brief, sustainability refers to meeting current needs without compromising future abilities. Achieving sustainability is a long road requiring deliberate and educated decisions, ironically oftentimes sacrificing short-term financial gain. True sustainability encapsulates factors across the ESG spectrum, from emissions reductions and ethical supply chains to equitable governance.
What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?
I would love to be involved in impact investing at some point in my career, directly influencing asset allocation with ESG factors as primary decision factors. Besides this, I want to work in teams who drive innovation and progress in the sustainability industry. Currently, my interests surround topics of ecological restoration and the ever evolving and growing segment of climate finance. As the prevalence of ESG increases across industries, I’m keen on staying at the forefront of change.
From an educational perspective, I intend on pursuing post-graduate education within a sustainability related field and leveraging this degree to navigate my early professional career.
What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?
My extracurricular involvements in sustainability have been primarily centered around three experiences. Firstly, I was heavily involved in my secondary school’s sustainability club for 7 years. I started off as a simple grade-rep, and worked my way up to the president level, representing our team at a national level at conferences and leading change in our community. From grassroots level changes such as promoting less wasteful air-conditioning usage to installing tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of sustainability-related equipment. Secondly, during my first semester at Western I Co-Founded and led Western Environment Business as VP of Events. Over the last three years, our team fostered a community of 200+ students seeking to learn more about sustainability in the corporate world. I specifically led case-competitions and speaker panels from ideation to execution. Finally, over the course of a summer internship, I worked with a company in Hong Kong with over 20,000 direct stakeholders to develop emissions reports, reduce their carbon footprint, develop sustainability considerate policies and all in all make material progress towards sustainable development in the organization.
