As a former Environmental Science student at Western, I am passionate about sustainable technology, especially within the energy sector, developing a passion for geography and earth science through my experiences in the program. I grew up frequently participating in activities such as hiking, camping, canoeing, swimming, and skiing, which have developed a fascination with nature. I aim to ensure businesses implement practical solutions to truly tackle climate issues with the appropriate context. I hope to be able to further broaden my knowledge of sustainable solutions and practices in a business context through the Sustainability Certificate.  

What is your personal definition of sustainability?

Sustainability is about ensuring that our short-term actions as a society do not cause harmful, long-term issues. Most importantly, sustainability is about being mindful of our decisions and generating a solution that minimizes long-term risk. The world is heading towards large-scale environmental damage caused by decisions made by thousands of companies over decades. Sustainability is not a compromise that companies make to create a positive brand image; it is a strategy that will result in long-term gain for both the customer and the company. Most importantly, it should focus on ensuring that future generations benefit from the company’s present actions. 

What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?

Sustainability is a growing area of concern for firms in almost every industry. As investments in renewable energies and sustainable firms become more prevalent, more experts will be needed to manage this transition. The issues surrounding climate change come from a long-term problem; this requires a long-term solution. I intend to continue my sustainability efforts throughout my career and hope that worldwide efforts towards energy efficiency and a more cyclical society become increasingly prevalent as my career develops. Sustainability will always be a concern in my career, throughout every decision I make. I hope to be able to continue the work of others by contributing to the energy transition that will eventually take place in Canada, and hope to encourage others to act on tangible goals for sustainability targets. The innovations powered by future sustainable technology will be the way forward for companies to ensure future success; these technological advancements will undoubtedly impact me in my professional career. 

What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?

I decided to plunge into environmental science in second year. My experience in these courses has been phenomenal and provided me with opportunities to study various fields (including chemistry, ecology, geography, and earth science) which collectively approach the climate issue with varying perspectives. I have always been interested in fundraising for various charities, such as raising money towards lower-income communities in Peru last year as part of an initiative I created with other students called Food for Food. Fundraising for lower-income areas disproportionally impacted by natural disasters exacerbated by climate change is a short-term solution to providing aid. Natural disasters and disease in disproportionally affected areas will only increase as climate change becomes more prevalent. My study of environmental science during the past year has illustrated the numerous issues which climate change has created; I hope to have a deeper impact that addresses the root cause of this crisis as I progress in my career.
