HBA Sustainability Certificate
Empowering the next generation of sustainable leaders
Hi! My name is Alexia Ahani and I am a current HBA1 student. Prior to joining Ivey, I was in the Medical Science program and am passionate about combining my love for science and business together to make a positive change in the healthcare industry. Growing up, I always spent my time outdoors either camping, swimming, or planting flowers, and thus want to ensure that future generations can experience the same joys of nature. Through the Ivey Sustainability Certificate, I hope to gain the skills and knowledge to make a constructive impact on environmental and social sustainability.
What is your personal definition of sustainability?
My personal definition of sustainability is maintaining and preserving healthy practices in all areas of life. For example, whether that be environmental practices (reducing carbon footprint, conservation of natural resources, etc.) or social practices (promoting social justice and equality, etc.), it is important to maintain a healthy balance in all practices. This not only helps ensure that future generations live in a viable environment, but one where they are supported and can thrive in.
What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?
As someone who plans to pursue a career that combines both business and healthcare together, I believe that sustainability can play many different roles in my professional career. For example, sustainable practices can be implemented in operations, supply chains, and product development in either healthcare settings or business corporations. Additionally, different countries have different health practices and insurance policies. As someone who hopes to work internationally, there will be many opportunities to uncover different sustainability practices and how to improve them to ensure all individuals' health needs are met and satisfied. Through doing this, new government policies relating to sustainability can be created and implemented in the future that can aid and encourage further healthy actions.
What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?
As a member of the Ivey Health Sector Club, I participated in the Ivey Healthcare Consulting Club where I collaborated with medical professionals to find solutions to current issues in London Hospitals. In this social sustainability project, I collaborated with peers to discover sustainable practices that could be implemented in London hospitals. More specifically, we were tasked to find methods to reduce the number of patients who leave the hospital without being. This was a very important project to me as everyone deserves the opportunity to have their health concerns addressed instead of choosing to forfeit their health due to long wait times.
