Corrine Tansowny

Corrine is an HBA1 pursuing a dual degree with Ivey and English. Post-graduation, she is interested in pursuing a career in sustainability, but first she wants to teach abroad. Outside of school, Corrine tries to spend as much of her time traveling as possible. She spent the month of August in France, and she plans to venture to Africa this summer. A native Calgarian, her other interests lie around the Rocky Mountains and include rock climbing and hiking. When the weather is not cooperating, you can find her indoors with a book and copious amounts of tea.

Personal Definition of Sustainability

I define sustainability as keeping the health of both people and the planet in mind when making business decisions. It means prioritizing your organizational goals in a way that ensures profit is not king. Looking for ways to improve the plight of fellow human beings and reduce the environmental impact of the actions necessary to produce that profit are equally if not more important. Businesses rely on the resources and purchasing dollars of the rest of the population to sustain themselves, so in turn they have a responsibility to not abuse their position in society. “With great power comes great responsibility” right?

Sustainability-in-Action

In high school, I was actively involved and then president of the Interact Club, a club that fundraised for three charities each year and volunteered as a group in the community. A few of the charities included African Children’s Educational Trust, Make a Wish Foundation and Spread the Net, and I volunteered with Inn From the Cold (a homeless shelter) and School Supplier for Kids (packing backpacks with supplies to be distributed to underprivileged children).  I am currently a Section Representative for the Ivey Corporate Sustainability Club. Through that position I have promoted and participated in the Corporate Sustainability Summit and Candygram sales benefiting Engineers Without Borders. I plan on continuing my involvement with the club next year, and we have plans to start a Terracycle program at Ivey. Students will be able to drop off old pens and highlighters (objects that are normally thrown in the trash) and through Staples they are upcycled. This summer, I am planning on participating in the Africa Service Learning trip.
