Personal Definition of Sustainability
My personal definition of sustainability is the ways in which human beings live and the actions they take to benefit society, the environment, and the communities in which you live. These actions help improve not only the people of today but will also benefit future generations. Sustainability adds an extra element to the ways individuals live by instilling accountability for taking care of the many resources; natural and man-made, that increase the quality of our lives. Sustainability is also the actions taken to make these beneficial resources available to all human beings.
Sustainability-in-Action
In the past, I have been involved in many sustainability initiatives to benefit the community and the environment. Sports, in particular, basketball, soccer, volleyball and cross-country, have always been a large part of my life. Not only did I participate in these activities but I believe in giving back to the community by volunteering to run programs that encourage youth to get involved. During high school I volunteered to assist in running elementary school basketball tournaments and coached 5-7 year old girls at basketball clinics. I believe these activities benefited the community by encouraging youth to be healthy and giving them something rewarding to do and avoid negative activities. I also like to give back to the community through fundraisers such as the CIBC Run for the Cure and the MS Bike Tour which allows me to be active while raising money for worthy causes. This summer, I am planning to work in the GTA and would like to participate in the MS Bike Tour again since I had such a positive experience. I would also like to get involved with Habitat for Humanity since it relates to my civil engineering experience.
