Gilgan is a noted Canadian philanthropist who has supported initiatives in health care, education, athletics, children, and environmental protection. He is also one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs. Since founding Mattamy Homes in 1978, he has grown the company into North America’s largest privately-owned homebuilder with more than 100,000 homes sold in hundreds of communities across Canada and the U.S.
In a fireside chat with Mary Federau, MBA ’87, EVP of Mattamy Asset Management, Gilgan spoke about the importance of leaving a legacy. He encouraged companies to give back to society by contributing to causes that bring economic value to communities. He said his own philanthropic contributions focus on initiatives that help communities to grow and thrive.
“It’s more than [making money], it’s making a difference as well and using the facility of money-making enterprises to make a difference in the world,” he said.
