Four HBA1s have started their time at Ivey off right: They’ve each received a $5,000 scholarship from Suncor through the Suncor Energy Emerging Leaders Award (SEELA).
Given annually, the award honours first-year HBA students who demonstrate good academic achievement, strong leadership, and keen interest in the energy sector. The scholarships go to students who are driven to make a difference in the energy sector.

Noah Dibley, Amy Zhou, Cole Truscott, and Katie Lawrence all applied for the scholarship when they first heard about it, and received the honour in February. Suncor Energy, known for its green sustainability initiatives, was the perfect company to sponsor the award for the four students.
“I originally entered mechanical engineering because of my interest in renewable energy,” Dibley said. “My synthesis of mechanical engineering and business creates an opportunity to enter the renewable energy industry.”
The scholarship was created in 2012 for two purposes: to establish the Suncor Chair in Energy Policy and to start a five-year program to enhance energy policy research. Ivey Professor Guy Holburn currently sits as the Suncor Chair in Energy Policy.
As HBA1s, the four award winners are unsure of where exactly they’ll wind up after Ivey, but they all share the common aspiration to work either in the energy sector or somewhere that will allow them to pursue green initiatives.
“I don’t know exactly what I want to do right now,” Lawrence said. “I’m working in research related to renewable energy over the summer so I’m excited to try that out.”
They all have different experiences, but after winning the Suncor Energy Emerging Leaders Awards, they are certainly moving in the right direction. Graduation is still in the far distance for these four, so they’re using their time at Ivey to explore different options and see what else they’re passionate about.
