MSc students were put on the front lines of one of the world’s most hotly-debated topics – the Syrian refugee crisis – during the inaugural Ivey-CEMS Critical Global Thinkers Series.

The Ivey MSc Association and CEMS Club Canada, together with Ivey professors Andreas Schotter and Oana Branzei, hosted the worldwide discussion about the Syrian refugee crisis titled “4 Global Dilemmas for International Leaders and Organizations. What Impact Could or Should Leaders and Business Make?” The conversation focused on four global dilemmas: space, time, humanity, and response scale and scope.

CEMS schools from around the world were invited to tune in to an online live stream and participate in the conversation either through video or text chat. At the event’s peak, there were 18 streams taking place. The largest participating group was the Vienna University of Economics and Business, where a class of 80-90 people streamed the event.

The discussion drew a total of nine participating schools:

  • HEC Paris – France
  • Vienna University of Economics and Business – Austria
  • Koç University Graduate School of Business – Turkey
  • Stockholm School of Economics – Sweden
  • Università Bocconi – Italy
  • Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo-FGV – Brazil
  • Norwegian School of Economics – Norway
  • UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School – Ireland
  • Corvinus University of Budapest – Hungary

“This will not be the last crisis,” Professor Schotter said. “Business schools and our students need to discuss this so they know how to respond as future leaders.”
