How many MBA students does it take to pull out a weed?

Jul 8, 2014

Ivey Impact Day

While part of Ivey’s mission is to develop leaders who give back to the communities in which they operate, it’s only through hands-on action that students learn what that means.

Ivey’s MBA students put the School’s mission into action by donating more than 300 volunteer hours to five London non-profit organizations for Ivey Impact Day on July 7. They had their hands in everything from planting trees for ReForest London, to restocking shelves at Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

And how many students does it take to remove such a weed? Nine when that weed is 15-feet tall!

“We dodged a couple of thunderstorms and also some critters while removing invasive species and helping newly planted trees thrive,” said Sneha Mathew, MBA 2015 Candidate. “The ReForest London experience was one that took teamwork to a whole new level and reminded us of how enjoyable and rewarding giving back to nature can be!”

"Ivey Impact day was a fantastic opportunity for our class to come together and to remember how important it is to give back. It is often easy to become weighed down by the 'daily grind' of studying, attending classes and managing our extracurricular activities,” said Anne-Sophie Woolnough, VP External, Impact Club. “As a team, we had the chance to contribute to the community of London and put our efforts towards helping others. It was rewarding, hard work and it reminded me that time spent out in the community can go a long way."

The day began with an inspiring message from Jennifer Jones, Director of Indigo's Love of Reading Foundation and leader in Corporate Social Responsibility.

“We were inspired by her commitment to giving back and the work she is doing to push the evolution of CSR in corporate Canada," Woolnough said.

The annual Impact Day, sponsored by RBC Foundation, is one of many ways Ivey students give back to their communities. More than 100 students participated in the event.
