COVID-19 is upending the traditional workplace as both employers and employees alike transition to home-based offices. After 20 years of studying their effectiveness, Organizational Behaviour Professor Martha Maznevski says virtual teams can often outperform face-to-face teams.
Maznevski says, when you are working virtually you can use more modes of communication at the same time allowing for better performance, as long as you keep yourself organized.
In an interview with Wei Chen of CBC's Ontario Morning, Maznevski also stressed the need for regularly scheduled team check-in meetings to provide "heartbeats" or structure during the work week.
