Electronic toy company VTech is receiving some backlash for its response to the November 2015 data leak in which hackers gained access to 10 million customer accounts.

VTech’s updated terms and conditions now requires customers to acknowledge and agree that any information sent or received while on its site may not be secure and may be acquired by unauthorized parties.

Assistant Professor Jean-Philippe Vergne spoke with Yahoo News concerning VTech’s zero accountability clause and how the situation could have been better handled.

“Any company could write that down in their terms and conditions because it is basically the case today – no digital communication network is a hundred per cent secure and it will never be,” said Vergne. “The part that’s problematic is the fact that something like this has rarely been stated by a company in this context.”
