Hailey Schoenfeld is an HBA student, and one of the student organizers behind 100 HBAs Who Care. She wrote a blog on the 100 HBAs Who Care event, on behalf of the organizing team.
On February 28, 2018, 100+ students took the time to reflect on what giving back really means to them – specifically, to discover what causes they most care about.
New to Ivey this year, 100 HBAs Who Care is an entirely student-led initiative aimed at connecting Ivey HBA students with individuals and organizations making a difference in the London community.
By purchasing a $10 ticket to the 100 HBAs Who Care event, students were able to vote for three charities they wanted to see present at the event and receive a portion of the total proceeds. On the night of the event, the top three voted charities presented and students voted again for which charity should receive 50 per cent of the total proceeds, with the other two charities receiving 25 per cent.
Access Cancer Therapies (ACT) Now received the most votes, followed by the Children’s Health Foundation and CONNECT for Mental Health.
The response from students was overwhelming. More than 100 HBAs purchased a ticket, and the event raised more than $1,200 for the three local causes!
“Our goal is to enable students to collectively embody the values of integrity and generosity,” Patrick Hickey, one of 10 members behind the initiative, said. “We wanted to provide the opportunity for students to give back to charities that resonate with them the most.”
The 100 HBAs Who Care event not only allowed students to give back to the community, but it gave smaller charities the opportunity to promote their causes to individuals who may not have heard of them before.
During Kylea Potvin’s speech on behalf of ACT Now for Cancer, she highlighted the importance of making giving back something to carry forward with us throughout our lives.
“To the 100 HBAs, to the community, to the committee that has done this: thank you! Keep doing your work,” she said. “This is the kind of support that we need, and these are the kinds of activities that all of us need to continue to do throughout our lives no matter what we’re doing or where we are.”
The 100 HBAs Who Care team would like to thank all students who donated and attended the first annual event. We look forward to building off this year’s success to create an even bigger impact next year and inspire more students to think about what issues matter most to them.
