Canada’s healthcare system consists of a single-payer system where medical services are publicly funded. However, some Canadians are arguing in favour of a private sector option. This could solve the long wait times for medical care in Canada.
Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation research analysts Sara Husni, Zoha Khan, Russell MacMillan, Emma Pearson, and Jovana Sibalija weigh in on the debate, saying Canada shouldn’t allow two-tiered practicing. They discuss their reasoning in a blog for the Health Centre’s website.
“A two-tiered health system could weaken the accessibility of care thus decreasing the quality of the public system while also challenging the value Canadians place on equity and universality,” they write.
