Since 2000, manufacturing output is down 11 per cent and employment in manufacturing has declined almost 24 per cent. But can Canadian manufacturing come back from this downturn?

In his op-ed for The Globe and Mail, Professor Paul Boothe, Director of the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management, looked at the causes of the decline in Canada’s manufacturing sector. He pulled from his Lawrence Centre research to provide answers on how Canadian manufacturers can succeed in the future.

“Has Canadian manufacturing been hard hit? Absolutely. Is it down for the count? Hardly,” said Boothe.  “But success in the fiercely competitive global markets is far from assured. Canadian firms need clear strategies to gain competitive advantage.”

Boothe emphasized the need for the Canadian government to support firms that want to grow and compete in global markets and attract new investment to Canada.
