Why did you decide to do an MBA?
The skills I developed through my time at sea can be applied in any industry. While I possess valuable skills like creative problem solving or ability to make split-second decisions in the face of ambiguity, I have a knowledge gap in the world of business. An MBA would help me fill this gap and allow me to use the tools that I have learnt so far.
What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?
Ivey has taught me that diversity and vibrancy in a team add to the quality of the work output. Talking to more people not only gives you a fresh perspective on the problems, but it also allows you to think outside the box in a way that you may not have picked up by yourself.
What's been the most surprising aspect of the Ivey MBA journey to date?
The most surprising aspect of my Ivey MBA journey would be to see how people flourish when challenged. I saw friends, from the most diverse backgrounds, faced with business problems, that they had never heard of, outperform their own expectations and everyone else's. Ivey brings out the best version in people.
Describe the role you play professionally:
As a marine engineer working on large oil and gas ships, I led multinational teams on projects involving mission-critical equipment to support the safe and on-time delivery of hazardous cargo.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
While working on a piece of steel in the middle of the ocean where the nearest assistance could be thousands of nautical miles away can be nerve-wracking, I also had a chance to work closely with people from all over the world.
What is your biggest professional accomplishment?
After earning a fast-track promotion, my first refueling operation in Tokyo as officer-in-charge was a tremendous success that beat our organization's KPIs. It helped me build trust with my senior colleagues and a strong rapport with my team members.
How do you manage stress (i.e. sports, exercise, meditation etc)?
Listening to music and spending time with close friends and family helps me find my inner peace.
