Why did you decide to do an MBA?
To gain foundational business knowledge
What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?
Knowledge of financial terms and concepts feels like the easy answer to this question. I think on a deeper level the most significant thing I've learned are nuances about myself, what I'm drawn to, what my strengths are, and what my weaknesses are.
What's been the most surprising aspect of the Ivey MBA journey to date?
The difficulty of keeping up with social events. If you think 24 hour reports are hard, or getting all of your case readings done, then just wait until there are back to back social events every week that you are trying to keep up with.
Describe the role you play professionally:
Working in my family business I play the role of jack of all trades doing whatever needs to be done. Having performed every functional role at the business I am well suited to fill operational and human resource gaps as needed. Outside of work hours I spend much of my time discussing strategy and positioning with my father.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Working for my father. Family business dynamics can be the most challenging thing in business.
What is your biggest professional accomplishment?
Serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
What books are on your bedside table AND/OR what podcast are you listing to right now?
Podcasts:
- Dry Powder
- Fantasy Footballers
Books:
- Buy then Build
- HBR Guide to: Buying a Small Business
How do you manage stress (i.e. sports, exercise, meditation etc)?
I thrive under stress so I tend not to manage it so much as I use it as fuel to get things done.
