Stephen S. Poloz served as the 9th Governor of the Bank of Canada from June 3, 2013 to June 2, 2020. As Governor, he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank. He first joined the Bank of Canada in 1981 and held positions over a 14-year span, culminating in his appointment as Chief of the Bank’s Research Department. He later joined Export Development Canada, serving as Chief Economist and President and CEO, before rejoining the Bank of Canada as Governor. Since 2013, Mr. Poloz has been a member of the Lawrence Centre Advisory Council, and assumed the role of Chair of the council in June 2020.
Born in Oshawa, Ontario, Mr. Poloz received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Queen’s University in 1978, and a master’s degree in economics in 1979 and a PhD in economics in 1982, both from the University of Western Ontario.
