Why did you choose Ivey’s HBA program?
I chose Ivey because I knew that regardless of what career path I followed, business would serve as an invaluable asset for me. I believe that all individuals are well served with a background in business, even if it is just for handling personal finances. That being said, in coming to Ivey I quickly realized that the real lessons to be learned were about leadership, working in teams, and solving complex problems. The applicability of these skills extends far beyond the parochial scope of a single career path.
Describe one highlight of your Ivey Experience thus far.
My fondest HBA memory thus far was acting as class president for my section in HBA1. Never, until that point, had I had the opportunity to lead and represent so many talented and hardworking individuals. It was the perfect chance for me to hone my leadership skills while contributing materially to the HBA Experience.
What advice do you have for incoming HBA students?
Enjoy every moment you have within Ivey and around your classmates. I promise sincerely that these will be two of the greatest years of your life. It very well will shape your perception of yourself and your future, as Ivey encourages you to dream big and accomplish bigger. Come in to HBA1 with an open mind and heart and you will be taken on an incredible journey of learning, self-discovery, and leadership.
How has Ivey’s Career Management set you up for success?
Career Management’s impact on our lives can be well described by a favourite saying around Ivey, “the things that you do not realize that you do not know are the most detrimental to your success.” In other words, the biggest challenges to your success are far beyond your realm of knowledge. Translating that to Ivey, Career Management serves as the conduit to our dreams, providing us with the resources and information that we initially did not know we needed. This enables us to obtain incredible jobs at some of the foremost firms in Canada.
What kind of support did you find the most helpful with the intense curriculum in HBA1?
The culture in Ivey is incredibly collective, as classmates and peers are genuinely interested in each other’s success. No matter your academic struggles, there is another Ivey student who is willing and able to help you at the drop of a hat. To that end, peer support was the most important to my academic success.
What has been the most challenging part of the program for you?
Time management has been one of the biggest challenges and growth areas for me in Ivey. With all of the extracurriculars available to Ivey students, as well as the social and academic demands of the program, I often found myself with a full schedule. However, with the support of my peers and Ivey Program Services, I was able to develop good time management skills that will be invaluable in my future.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan to attend medical school in Ontario where I intend to apply the things I have learned in Ivey to a sector that can benefit from multidisciplinary thinking.
