Why Ivey?
Between the engaging classroom experience and Ivey’s reputation, I was confident Ivey would best prepare me for a future career in business.
Ivey teaches you a new way of thinking; it teaches you that there is usually never one correct way to approach a situation. Therefore, analyzing a case and developing a strategy is only the first step. The discussion-oriented classroom has taught me to not only justify my own decisions, but critically assess the opinions of others as well.
One great part of the Ivey program is how career management is integrated into the actual program structure. During these classes our career advisors went over the fundamental lessons, such as resume writing and networking, which provided clarity and direction for recruitment.
What was one highlight of your Ivey Experience?
One incredible part of the HBA program is how it opens you up to the diverse areas of business. I quickly realized my passion for the retail industry and got involved in the Fashion & Retail Conference. Now in HBA2, I’m the Speaker Chair for the conference and it is definitely an exciting opportunity I’ll look back on in the future.
What advice would you give incoming HBA students?
Everyone is unique, so focus on carving your own path and don’t worry about what your friends are doing. At Ivey there are so many opportunities to pursue your interests. Even if you have a good sense of what you want to pursue, my advice would be to remain open and take in as much as you can.
Given the demanding curriculum in HBA1, what support is available for students?
What amazed me most about the Ivey classroom was how unique all my section mates were, from their school to personal interests. Your experiences are what shape your thoughts and opinions though, so everyone has value to add to the classroom.
There is no shortage of support in HBA1, including HBA2’s, faculty, and staff. However, one of the biggest support networks is the bond within sections. In a section there are 75 other individuals who know exactly what you’re going through, and are often more than happy to help academically or personally.
