Why Ivey?

When I first toured Western and Ivey while deciding on a university, my tour guide said that Ivey’s main objective was to train students as managers. Amongst all the fascinating facts about Ivey, this one phrase stuck with me. I figured that the case method teaching and the incredible network I would develop provided an unparalleled opportunity.

Throughout my time at Ivey, I have learned many skills to put in to my business "toolbox". I can perform a Discounted Cash Flow, know how to do ratios and I understand the components of an effective marketing plan but more importantly, I have a strong sense of how and when to use these skills to solve a problem most effectively.

What was one highlight of your Ivey Experience?

One of the most incredible experiences was participating in the Ivey Honduras Microfinance Trip. This was so powerful because we were able to make a strong impact in a low-income community, and change the perspectives of the people we worked with.

What advice would you give incoming HBA students?

My biggest piece of advice to students entering HBA is to set goals for what they wish to achieve from the Ivey experience. There are so many incredible learning opportunities, people to meet, and new things to try that it is important to understand one’s own priorities. You will undoubtedly benefit immensely from the program, but how is up to you.

Given the demanding curriculum in HBA1, what support is available for students?

The HBA program is undoubtedly built to challenge you as a person. Being a part of the Ivey classroom is truly a unique experience. Instead of the professor being the sole provider of knowledge and information, my peers and I had the opportunity to shape our own learning environment.  A large part of the program’s success is pushing students out of their comfort zone. That said, Ivey has done an incredible job providing a support network and safety net to ensure each person achieves their potential.

In my opinion, Ivey Career Management is the best career centre among all business schools in Canada. They provide continuous and valuable support to students and are extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the recruiting process. No matter what the industry or type of job, Career Management staff do whatever they can to provide support.
