Doug Murphy

Lecturer, Strategy

Doug Murphy most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Corus Entertainment Inc., one of Canada’s leading media and content companies. From 2015 to 2023, he oversaw the expansion of Corus’ portfolio of prominent brands—including Global Television, HGTV, Food Network, W Network, and Global News—across television, radio, digital platforms, and pioneering Canadian streaming services such as STACKTV and TELETOON+.

In his first year as CEO, Murphy executed the transformative $2.65 billion acquisition of Shaw Media, successfully integrating operations and exceeding synergy targets. He subsequently reduced company debt by more than $1 billion and led multiple financings, including equity offerings, high-yield bond issuances, credit facility amendments, and dividend adjustments to strengthen financial flexibility. Recognized for his operational discipline, Murphy introduced the Fit for the Future initiative, streamlining costs and workforce structure to address shifting industry dynamics.

Murphy also played a central role in shaping Canada’s broadcasting regulatory environment, ensuring domestic companies remained competitive with global digital platforms. Under his leadership, Corus was honored with Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures award for six consecutive years.

Previously, Murphy spent a decade at The Walt Disney Company in executive roles across Canada, the United States, and Japan. Among his achievements were introducing The Disney Stores to Canada, launching The Walt Disney Gallery, and expanding The Disney Store Japan into the country’s largest foreign-owned retail chain. He later served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of The Disney Store North America and concluded his Disney career as Senior Vice President of Business Development for Disney Theme Parks and Resorts.

Murphy holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an HBA from the Ivey Business School. In the fall of 2025, he will serve as a guest lecturer at Western University’s Ivey Business School with the launch of a new elective course for HBA and MBA students titled Navigating Change – Lessons from CEOs Managing Strategic Transformation in Uncertain Times.
