Growing the Canadian venture capital and private equity ecosystem

The infusion of the Canadian Government’s Venture Capital Catalyst Initiative (VCCI) — the $400-million investent to increase the availability of late-stage venture capital — will surely help further energize Canada's innovation-based economy. But are there enough trained investment professionals to sustain the growth of Canada's venture capital and private equity ecosystem?

Gregory Phipps, faculty director of The Ivey Academy's Canadian Private Capital Investment School, writes in CVCA Central that there currently exists a skills gap in the Canadian equity investment sector:

To date, nobody in Canada has developed and delivered a formal program to train early-career equity investment professionals. To ensure Canadian venture capitalists and private equity investors are respected and regarded worldwide as competent professionals, we need to ensure a minimal level of education and competency among practitioners.
