In this session:
In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, organizations are facing a constant barrage of disruptions. Business leaders need new ways of thinking to not only tackle the constant change, but also help to dampen it. In this webinar, we will discuss how problems can be solved by seeing and thinking in systems. We will describe a research-validated tool, called Innovation North’s Compass framework, that combines systems thinking with design thinking to offer actionable solutions to complex problems.
For this Lifelong Learning livestream developed in partnership with Innovation North, we’re joined by Tima Bansal, Professor of Strategy & Sustainability at Ivey Business School, who also founded and continues to lead Innovation North. We are also joined by Colton Schwenk, Innovation Product Manager from Walmart Canada. In this session, our guests will break down how the Compass framework is used to develop solutions, drawing upon a case example of a complex business challenge faced by Walmart Canada, one of Innovation North’s practice partners.

Colton Schwenk
Innovation Product Manager, Walmart Canada
Born and raised on the east coast of the U.S., Colton came to Canada in 2008, which he now considers his home country. Since then, his education and career have followed a winding path, spanning an array of industries. After earning his bachelor’s degree in cultural and intellectual history at Queen’s University, he later become a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, health systems researcher, business design consultant, and corporate innovation specialist. This wide range of experiences has provided him with a front-row seat to study numerous, complex, systems—from biological and physiological to organizational, social, and political systems. Currently, Colton has the privilege of serving as a Product Manager at Walmart Canada, leading the development of products and projects that are best characterized as equal parts strategic importance and ambiguity. When not reflecting on systems, he spends most of his time reading, frequenting art galleries, and exploring restaurants in downtown Toronto with his wife, Tiffany.
